MALAY, Aklan – A total of ₱3,450,000.00 worth of funds from DSWD Field Office VI Sustainable Livelihood Program will be utilized for the installation of a community-based set net in the Municipality of Malay. Lambaklad, a Japanese concept of set net placed along strategic coastal areas, works as a trap for migrating fish, making it easier for harvests. This fishing method is considered to be more productive since it lessens working time, ensures good quality of catch, lessens fuel consumption of fishing activities, and preserves marine resources.
The implementation of this initiative is in support of the town’s goal of strengthening its fishing industry and establishing a new source of income for its constituents. The total funding came from the pooled funds of eight DSWD-accredited fisherfolk associations from the 10 coastal barangays of the Malay, namely: Poblacion Fisherfolks Association, Caticlan Fisherfolks Association, Arsan Fisherfolks Association, Cubaynon Fisherfolks Association, Motag Fisherfolks Association, Balusbos Fisherfolks Association, Naasug Fisherfolks Association with each association composed of 30 members and have received ₱450,000.00 and Cogonian’s Fishermen Association with 20 members and have received ₱300,000.00.
The local government unit has also provided ₱108,000.00 which will be used for the conduct of skills training of beneficiaries on the process of set net installation, operation, maintenance, and future expansion of the fish shelters. During the Grand Project Launching of Community-Based Set Net for Sustainable Fisheries last January 11, 2023 at the Malay Municipal Gym, Regional Director Atty. Carmelo N. Nochete expressed his confidence in the livelihood project that this will not only promote the fishing industry but also create an additional source of income for association members and their families.
Present in the activity were Municipal Mayor Frolibar S. Bautista and local officials. Assistant Regional Director for Operations Arwin O. Razo, Promotive Services Division Chief Luna Moscoso, SLP Regional Program Management Office staff headed by Regional Program Coordinator Mary Ann Masculino, and Aklan SLP Provincial Office staff headed by Provincial Coordinator Rovi Christine Gonzales were also at the event to facilitate and witness the project launching.###(WOOchon/SLPRPMO)
