janice cabrillosCARPENTRY has always been presumed to be a man’s job. But not in Sibunag, Guimaras.
Janice Cabrillos, a native of the municipality, says that she knows carpentry. In fact, she has been receiving successive orders.
“We know how to use hammer, saw and other tools in carpentry,” said Janice.
Janice is only one of the 26 beneficiaries of the Carpentry for Women training conducted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under the Sustainable Livelihood Program in the town.
A total of P515,500 was invested by the agency to train them.
They are registered under the Sibunag Women Association in Carpentry (SWAC).
The training focused on furniture making and layouting of building lines, installing of framing works, architectural ceiling and wall, sheath panels and floor finishing, doors, windows and jambs and panels.
“The livelihood training is a very big help to me. It has made me believe in myself and that I am capable of doing carpentry even if many think it is only for men,” Janice said.
Aside from Carpentry, other projects implemented under the livelihood program include Skills training on seeweeds processsing, intensive training on organic vegetable production, hollow blocks for women, motorcycle repair, servicing and maintenance and welding and metal arc fabrication./dswd6/May R.
