KALAHI-CIDSS holds O&M training for community volunteers in Madalag, Aklan

To strengthen the sustainability of community infrastructure projects, the KALAHI-CIDSS Area and Municipal Coordinating Teams conducted an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) training session in Madalag, Aklan.

This initiative aimed to give community volunteers a deeper understanding of their vital responsibilities in the upkeep and operation of completed subprojects, which have now been officially recognized as barangay assets.

KALAHI-CIDSS Madalag Area Coordinator Marilee Trombini emphasized that the training was designed to ensure volunteers fully grasp the significance of O&M for the continued success of KALAHI-CIDSS-funded community projects.

The training brought together 25 O&M presidents, each entrusted with the long-term sustainability of specific projects.
During the session, Ms. Trombini underscored the importance of clearly defined roles and responsibilities outlined in the Barangay Maintenance Program.

She led discussions tailored to each barangay’s unique circumstances, noting that O&M organizations vary based on the types of subprojects implemented.
In Madalag, many of these organizations are farmers’ associations.

Trombini stressed that a strong understanding of their functions is crucial for these groups to effectively maintain and operate the projects post-turnover, guaranteeing their sustainability and ongoing benefits for the community.

Maria Liza Nahil, President of the Tigbawan Farmers Association, pointed out the importance of keeping the Barangay Development Council informed about the progress of community projects. She also acknowledged the challenges and the significant role of O&M presidents in fostering community development.

Madalag Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer, RSW Annie Sioco said that the discussions were highly beneficial in equipping association presidents with the necessary knowledge about O&M as well as their roles and functions.

She noted that serving as a president is a demanding role that requires significant time and resources. However, Sioco emphasized that the dedication and volunteer spirit exhibited by community members are invaluable.

She expressed that the community’s efforts are a form of service that surpasses monetary value and that divine reward accompanies genuine service to others.
This training underscores KALAHI-CIDSS’s commitment to empowering community volunteers, ensuring that they are well-equipped to sustain and manage community projects for the continued development and well-being of Madalag’s residents./dswd6/mmc
