Php 247M-worth of assistance for El Nino-affected families
The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office VI, in partnership with Local Government Units, and other stakeholders, provided Php 247M worth of FFP (Family Food Packs), water, cash, non-food, and water assistance to affected families due to the effects of El Niño in Western Visayas.
According to the DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communication (DROMIC) Report’s consecutive five-month rainfall observations from September 2023 to January 2024, 10 provinces including Negros Occidental in Western Visayas had experienced dry spells, while 17 provinces including Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo had experienced dry conditions. In the same report, the findings as of September 2024 show that the dry spell and drought affected 127 municipalities and cities within the region, impacting agricultural land, livestock, and water supplies.
In the data gathered as of September 24, 2024; 585, 823 families or 2, 136,882 persons in 3, 228 barangays in Region VI were affected. However, no families were displaced in evacuation centers nor with their extended families, and no damaged houses were reported./dswd6/Aneeka Samantha Yue Sin
