The Department of Social Welfare Field Office VI led the observance of the 17th Cerebral Palsy Awareness and Protection Week in Western Visayas.
To mark the event, the agency conducted a symposium on Cerebral Palsy together with the Association of Persons with Cerebral Palsy (APCP), Regional Council for Disability Affairs (RCDA), Philhealth, Department of Health (DOH) and Iloilo City government on Tuesday.
Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition caused by brain damage and it is the most common motor and movement disability of childhood. It causes a range of disabilities, from mild to severe.
The yearly event is in line with Proclamation No. 588, declaring the period from September 16 to 22 as Cerebral Palsy Awareness and Protection Week.
This year’s celebration focuses on the theme “Ugnayan, Malasakit at Paglingap sa Taong May Cerebral Palsy sa Panahon ng Covid-19 Pandemic.”
Regional Director Ma. Evelyn B. Macapobre said that the agency remains committed to empower persons with cerebral palsy in the region.
“The DSWD will always endeavor for the welfare and protection of our PWDs such as those with cerebral palsy. We want accessibility of services for them and their inclusion and mainstreaming in all aspects of development in the society,” said Macapobre.
Judith Tanate-Barredo, DSWD focal on Persons with Disability said the agency provides technical assistance and resource augmentation to the LGUs along programs and services for PWDs.
During yesterday’s symposium, the DSWD6 distributed 50 family food packs to persons with cerebral palsy and their families during the said event. Each food pack costs P500.
Likewise, the agency augments resources of LGUs by providing assistive devices and financial assistance to PWDs. #dswd6/kvb
