The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office VI warns the public on improper usage of Social Media in times of Disaster.
“People should not post fake news amidst typhoon,” says Rebecca P. Geamala, DSWD6 Regional Director.
In a memorandum issued on Friday, Geamala called on its employees to only post validated and factual news, pictures, links and other informative materials related to disaster.
“We have as well reminded our staff for the proper usage of social media, since at this crucial time it is highly limited to only factual and informative information. We do not want the public to panic,” added Geamala.
Moreover, Geamala reiterates that the department is the Vice Chair of the Response Cluster in the RDRRMC in Western Visayas.
“We provide augmentation support and assist to the LGUs during emergencies or calamities,” she said.
Further Geamala said that the agency recognizes the freedom of expression but all should be responsible in using the social media as a venue to further reach clients and provide vital information related to disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. ###
