The Department of Social Welfare and Development recently inaugurated a P1.6 million Kalahi-CIDSS school building in Bingawan, Iloilo.
The one unit-two classroom building is now ready to accommodate pupils of the Quinangyana Elementary School. It is only one of the sub-projects provided by Kalahi-CIDSS to the barangay.
Kalahi-CIDSS also funded the concreting of farm to market road and construction of day care center in Quinangyana.
Community volunteer Rosie Sancio said learning now would not be difficult for pupils. They will be comfortable inside the classroom. The room is also spacious and fit for children who are just starting to go to school.
She said the classrooms are intended for Grade 1 pupils, whom are restless when in school.
Sancio said the roof and ceiling of the old classroom was blown off by Typhoon Yolanda. Yet, learners are still confined on the same room because of the lack of classrooms in the school.
He added that if it rains, classes stopped. When it’s sunny, children will have to endure the heat. The integrity of the structure is also the concern of the parents.
The lack of functional classroom was presented by the community and school authorities for funding to Kalahi-CIDSS- Government of Australia-Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (GoA-DFAT).
It was then prioritized for funding in 2015 and the project was completed last week.
Sancio, whose daughter Erich is one of the beneficiaries of the classroom said their children are now safe. At early age, they will also learn toilet manners because the classrooms have comfort rooms for boys and girls.
Aside from comforts of the school children, Sancio is also grateful that she was able to share her time by doing volunteer works in Kalahi-CIDSS. Someday my children will be proud of me because of my contribution in building this school, she ended. (MMC/KC/DSWD)
