THE DSWD6 lauded the Iloilo City government for being friendly to the elderly.
“What Iloilo City has done is commendable. They used their own resources to help the elderly,” said Judith Tanate, focal person for elderly during the recently conducted Senior Citizens Congress in Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center.
According to Tanate, the city government has adopted the national government’s scheme of providing pension for the elderly by serving more senior citizens.
“We hope that more LGUs will follow,” said Tanate.
Under its own social pension program, Iloilo City provides stipend at P500 each per semester to 5,000 eligible senior citizens.
A total of P5 million is being allotted for this by the LGU every year.
Eligible are elderly who are not catered by DSWD, 65 years old and above, not receiving pension or regular support from immediate relatives./dswd6/May Grecia-Rago
