Peace Corps Volunteer

MINA, Iloilo (Kwento ng Pagtataguyod) – I am Crystal L. Garcia, 23 years old from Los Angeles, California and a Peace Corps volunteer assigned in the Municipality of Mina here. My mission here in the Philippines serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Children, Youth, and Family (CFY) sector. Being with youth in covering leadership, education, and life skills along with adapting into the culture and their language which brings me great strength in getting to know the community more.

I am proud to say that hearing feedback from the youth about inspiring and motivating them into their journey. As most of us go through there are ups and downs but that’s when we find alternative ways to proceed with our goals. Through volunteerism and advocacy, CYF Peace Corps promotes peace, compassion, and sustainable development to create a positive and lasting impact on society. In addition, we are able to collaborate with impactful and inspiring volunteers from the academe and various economic sectors.

Immersing myself in the local culture and language has strengthened my connection with the community, allowing me to better understand and support their needs. One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience is hearing from the youth about how our work has inspired and motivated them in their own journeys. Every moment shared with them is meaningful, and I cherish the opportunity to contribute to their growth.

As a Peace Corps volunteer assigned to the 4Ps Office in Mina, Iloilo, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to conduct Youth Development Sessions (YDS) across 21 barangays. My mission this summer was not only to engage with the 4Ps youth beneficiaries but also to cultivate young leaders within each community. I’m proud to share that eight barangays now have active 4Ps Youth Leaders who have co-facilitated sessions with me, and a total of 15 youths to have shown outstanding commitment, mentorship, and a spirit of volunteerism that reflects the heart of true leadership.

Working closely with the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) has also been a key part of our success. Their support through resources and participation in sessions has made a significant impact. I truly hope this partnership continues to grow stronger, as their active presence enhances the sessions immensely.

I also want to express my gratitude to the 4Ps Parent Leaders who have warmly welcomed me into their communities. Their support, whether through encouragement, assistance, or simply showing up helps inspire their children to take part and make the most of these learning experiences. This June, I presented at a Family Development Session (FDS) about how youth development programs benefit families. It was rewarding to share the positive effects of the sessions with 4Ps beneficiaries and encourage parents to support their children’s active participation.

As I continue to navigate my role here in Mina, I’ve had the chance to build networks and connect with various municipal offices to enrich the content and reach of our YDS. It has opened up opportunities to demonstrate how civic engagement can be both practical and transformative. These partnerships with offices such as MENRO, MDRRMO, POPCOM, and others are integral to creating well-rounded and impactful sessions. Through these collaborations, we’re equipping the youth with the knowledge and tools to face real-world challenges while encouraging courage, empowerment, and volunteerism.

I am deeply grateful for the chance to work alongside the 4Ps youth leaders and witness their growth firsthand. Making a positive impact in their lives brings me immense joy and continually inspires my own personal development. Being a mentor to them has been one of my greatest achievements, and I look forward to the journey we will continue together.
